How to Draw Bluey: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

How to draw Bluey in 20 easy steps

Step-by-step Bluey drawing for kids · DrawAlong

Ready for something a little bigger? Bluey is our first Medium drawing: 20 lines instead of 9. The trick that makes it easy: the outline comes first. You draw the whole shape of Bluey before touching a single detail, so there is always something Bluey-shaped on your page.

Work through the steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go. Big drawings are just small drawings that kept going.

How to draw Bluey, step by step

  1. 1Draw the head and both pointy ears

Start big! Draw the whole top of Bluey: up one pointy ear, dip down between them, and up and over the other ear.

  2. 2Draw the left side of the body

Draw the left side of the body in one long line, from the ear all the way down.

  3. 3Draw the big zig-zaggy tail

Draw the big zig-zaggy tail sticking out at the bottom left.

  4. 4Draw the left leg and foot

Draw the left leg: straight down, around the foot, and back up.

  5. 5Draw the right leg and foot

Draw the right leg the same way: down, around the foot, and back up.

  6. 6Draw the spiky right paw

Draw the spiky little paw sticking out on the right.

  7. 7Draw the right side of the body

Close the outline: draw the right side of the body all the way up to the ear. The whole shape of Bluey is there!

  8. 8Draw the arm and the little paw

Draw the arm coming down the left side, with its little bumpy paw resting on the tail.

  9. 9Draw the line inside the tail

Draw the line along the inside of the tail.

  10. 10Draw the big curvy line above the legs

Draw the big curvy line above the legs, like a rainbow across the body.

  11. 11Draw a big circle patch around the left eye

Now the face. Draw a big circle patch around where the left eye will go.

  12. 12Draw the patch around the right eye

Draw the matching patch around the right eye: a big curve that tucks in behind the nose.

  13. 13Draw the big nose

Draw the big rounded nose in the middle of the face.

  14. 14Draw the big happy mouth

Draw the big happy mouth: one wide smile.

  15. 15Draw the left eye

Draw the left eye: a circle inside the big patch.

  16. 16Draw the right eye

Draw the right eye: a smaller circle next to the nose.

  17. 17Add the inside of the left ear

Add a little triangle inside the left ear.

  18. 18Add the inside of the right ear

Add a little triangle inside the right ear.

  19. 19Add the spot on the left side

Add the spot on the left side of the body.

  20. 20Add one more spot below it

Add one more spot just below it. Bluey is done!

Time to color!

Bluey is a blue heeler: try sky blue for the body, deep blue for the eye patches, ears, spots and tail, and cream for the legs and tummy. The new gray and dark brown swatches are great for inventing your own heeler too.

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is this drawing too hard for young kids?
It is our first Medium drawing, best for kids who have finished a few Easy ones. The outline-first order means the drawing looks like Bluey almost immediately, which keeps kids going. The live version checks every stroke, so nobody gets lost.
How long does Bluey take?
Around 10 minutes for the lines, plus coloring time. It is a great "quiet half hour" activity, and the finished character is worth it.
What if my child gives up halfway?
That is completely normal for a first big drawing! Progress stays on screen the whole session, and every accepted line is a little win. Try a break after the outline is closed (step 7) and finish the details after.
