How to Draw a Duck: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
How to draw a duck in 7 easy steps
A duck is a wonderful first animal to draw because it is really just one big friendly line: a round head that flows down the neck into a plump body with a pointy tail. Add a flat bill, a wing, two webbed feet and an eye, and it is done.
Follow the seven steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a duck, step by step
1Draw the duck's head, neck and body in one big line
This one is fun: draw the duck's head, neck and body all in one big line. Start at the top of the head, curve down the front, around the tummy, out to the pointy tail, and back up the neck.
2Add the flat bill
Add the flat bill on the front of the head. Ducks use it to dabble in the water.
3Draw the wing on the side
Draw a big wing shape on the duck's side.
4Draw a feather line inside the wing
Add a curved feather line inside the wing.
5Draw the first leg and webbed foot
Draw the first leg with its wide webbed foot.
6Draw the other leg and foot
Draw the other leg and foot next to it. Webbed feet are built-in flippers!
7Draw the little round eye
Finish with a little round eye. Quack, you drew a duck!
Time to color!
Classic look: a sunshine yellow duck with an orange beak and wing, a black eye, and a yellow feather stripe. Or use the background bucket to paint a sky blue pond.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- What age is this duck drawing for?
- It works great for ages 4 to 8. The whole duck is one big shape plus a few simple curves, so younger kids can finish it with a little help and older kids can zoom through on their own.
- What if my lines come out wobbly?
- Wobbly lines are completely fine. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, so a line just needs to follow the same general path, not be perfect. Wobbly ducks are the cutest ducks anyway.
- What do we need to get started?
- On paper, just a pencil and some crayons. Or draw it right in the browser: DrawAlong works on tablets, phones and computers with nothing to install, and coloring is tap-to-fill at the end.
