How to draw a tree, step by step

  1. 1Draw the big fluffy treetop with lots of bumps

Start with the biggest shape: a huge fluffy treetop, like a cloud made of bumps. Go around and around until it closes up.

  2. 2Draw the trunk down from the treetop

Draw the trunk hanging down from the treetop: down one side, flare out at the bottom like a foot, across, and back up the other side.

  3. 3Draw a round apple in the leaves

Draw a small round apple inside the leaves. Just a little circle!

  4. 4Add a second apple near the top

Add a second apple near the top of the tree.

  5. 5Add a third apple on the right

Add a third apple over on the right side.

  6. 6Add one more apple down low

Add one more apple down low. Four apples means a good harvest.

  7. 7Draw a bark line up the middle of the trunk

Finish with one gentle bark line up the middle of the trunk, from the bottom all the way to the leaves.

Time to color!

Classic look: bright green leaves, a brown trunk and shiny coral red apples. A yellow or pink tree makes a lovely autumn or blossom tree too.

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tree a good drawing for young kids?
Yes, it is one of the friendliest drawings there is. The treetop is just a big bumpy cloud, the trunk is two lines and a bottom, and the apples are little circles. Kids as young as four can follow along.
What if the bumpy treetop comes out wobbly?
Wobbly is perfect for a tree, real leaves are never neat! DrawAlong checks each line gently, so close counts, and extra wiggles just make the tree look fluffier.
What do we need to draw it?
On paper, just a pencil and some crayons. In the app, nothing at all: DrawAlong runs free in the browser, and when the last line is done every part becomes tap-to-fill for coloring.
