How to draw a t-rex, step by step

  1. 1Draw the big boxy head

Start with the biggest shape: a big boxy head with a long snout, like a rectangle with round corners.

  2. 2Draw the back and the long tail

From the back of the head, draw one long swooping line down and out. That is the back and the long tail!

  3. 3Draw under the tail

Draw under the tail, curving back toward the body.

  4. 4Draw the back leg with its toes

Draw the back leg: down, around, and add little toe bumps at the bottom.

  5. 5Connect the tummy between the legs

Connect the tummy between the legs with a short curve.

  6. 6Draw the front leg and up the tummy

Draw the front leg with its toes, then keep going up the tummy all the way to the chin. The whole T-Rex is there!

  7. 7Add a tiny little arm

Add a tiny little arm on the chest. T-Rex arms are famously small.

  8. 8Draw the mouth line

Draw the mouth: one straight line across the snout.

  9. 9Add pointy teeth

Add pointy zigzag teeth under the mouth line. Rawr!

  10. 10Draw the eye

Draw a round eye. Your T-Rex is complete!

Time to color!

Forest green with a cream tummy is the classic look, but orange, purple or spotted dinosaurs are just as real (nobody can prove otherwise). Try coloring the mouth coral and keeping the teeth white.

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a T-Rex hard to draw?
Not this way! The trick is drawing the outline first: head, back and tail, then legs. There are no tricky small parts, and the tiny arms are famously easy.
What age is this for?
Around 4-8. The lines are long and swoopy rather than fiddly, which suits little hands. The live version checks each stroke with a generous tolerance.
Can we color it in?
Yes: the whole dinosaur, the mouth, the teeth and the eye are all tap-to-fill regions, plus line and background colors.
