How to Draw a Chicken: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
How to draw a chicken in 9 easy steps
A chicken is a wonderful drawing for kids because it is really just one big friendly loop: a round head that flows into a plump body and sweeps up into a pointy tail. Add a bumpy comb, a tiny beak, a wing and two little legs, and you have a hen that looks ready to strut around the yard.
Follow the nine steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a chicken, step by step
1Draw the big chicken body with a pointy tail
Start with the biggest shape: one plump chicken body, all in one loop. Round head on the left, big curvy tummy underneath, and a pointy tail sweeping up on the right.
2Draw a curved line inside the tail
Draw a curved line inside the tail, from the back down to the bottom. Now the tail looks like a fan of feathers.
3Draw the wing on the body
Draw the wing: a big rounded teardrop floating right in the middle of the body.
4Draw the first leg with little toes
Draw the first leg: go straight down from the tummy, then add two little toes at the bottom, and come back up.
5Draw the second leg next to it
Draw the second leg right next to the first one, toes and all. Now your chicken can stand!
6Draw the bumpy comb on top of the head
Draw the comb on top of the head: two or three little bumps, like a tiny squishy crown.
7Draw the pointy beak
Draw the beak: a small pointy triangle on the front of the face.
8Draw the wobbly wattle under the beak
Right under the beak, add the wattle: a little droplet shape that wobbles when a chicken walks.
9Draw the little round eye
Finish with a small round eye. Bawk bawk, your chicken is done!
Time to color!
Try a cream body with a white wing, a coral red comb and wattle, and orange beak and legs, or go bold and make your hen brown or even purple.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this chicken drawing good for young kids?
- Yes, it is made for ages 4 to 8. Almost the whole chicken is one big shape drawn first, and everything after that is a small, simple addition like a bump, a triangle or a circle.
- What if my lines come out wobbly?
- Wobbly lines are completely fine, real chickens are pretty wobbly too. The app checks each stroke gently and generously, so a shaky loop or a crooked leg still counts and still looks great.
- What do we need to draw along?
- Nothing special. Use any paper and a crayon or pencil, or tap "Draw it live" and draw with a finger right in the browser. It is free and there is nothing to download.
