How to Draw a Dog: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
How to draw a dog in 10 easy steps
Every kid wants to draw a dog, and the good news is a friendly puppy is just a circle head, floppy ears, a round body, a spot and a waggy tail. No tricky shapes, no rubber-eraser tears.
Work through the ten steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" to have DrawAlong guide your child line by line on screen. Each line gets a gentle check, a cheer when it’s right, and a friendly "try again" when it needs another go.
How to draw a dog, step by step
1Draw a big circle for the head
Draw a big circle for the dog’s head. Take your time, or don’t! Wobbly circles make friendly dogs.
2Add a floppy left ear
Add a long, floppy ear hanging down the left side of the head, like a droopy oval.
3Add a floppy right ear
Add a matching floppy ear on the right side. Floppy ears are what make it a puppy!
4Draw a round body under the head
Draw a big, round body under the head, a little wider at the bottom.
5Add a waggy tail
Add a waggy tail curving up from the body. This dog is happy to see you.
6Draw a big spot around the right eye
Draw a big spot around where the right eye will go. Every good mutt has one.
7Draw the left eye
Draw a small circle for the left eye.
8Draw the right eye
Draw another small circle for the right eye, inside the big spot.
9Draw an oval nose
Add an oval nose right in the middle of the face.
10Draw a big smile
Finish with a big, wide smile under the nose. Woof, done!
Time to color!
Brown, golden, spotted or blue, any color makes a good dog. Try coloring the ears a darker shade than the face for instant puppy charm.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this dog easy enough for a 5-year-old?
- Yes. It’s nine simple lines: circles, ovals and curves. In the live version, guides show exactly where each line goes and the tolerance is generous, so little hands succeed quickly.
- My child gets frustrated when drawings "look wrong." Does this help?
- That’s exactly what DrawAlong is built for. When a line is close enough, the app replaces it with a clean version, so the finished dog always looks good and kids end proud instead of discouraged.
- Can we print or save the finished dog?
- In the live tutorial, kids color the dog with tap-to-fill colors, then download it as a PNG picture, perfect for printing or sending to grandparents.
